About this image

Been wanting to do this animation for a while.. The changing face of Uranus 2015-2022, as its orbital position causes the north pole to turn towards us. Best IR image from each year taken with my 444mm dobsonian & various ZWO cameras. Used Baader 610nm and 685nm filters.

We are used to Saturn's Polar regions darkening as summer approaches, at least in visible light, so it is nice to see this unusual change for Uranus, albeit in a different waveband. It is a pity that the planet shows so little albedo contrast visually. I recall seeing it very well with the 1 metre Cassegrain at Pic du Midi in 1986 when one pole was well presented to the Earth. I could see no detail other than limb darkening, but contemporary drawings with smaller scopes showing a dark polar cap were being published! It is easy to see what one expects to see......
