About this image

This interesting spiral galaxy in Ursa Major was discovered in February 1788 by William Herschel.

The image shows a bright nucleus with a fainter disk seen edge-on. Traces of dust lanes are also visible. The galaxy has an extensive tidal stream, presumably a result of an intergalactic encounter, but this is not seen here. A galaxy well worthy of further attention.

Distance c.50million ly. Size c.75,000 ly. Apparent mag. 11.2.

Moon waxing gibbous, 13 days, 95%. Light cloud.
