About this image

This spectacular galaxy cluster in Virgo is the Deep Sky Section's April 'Object of Interest'. Apart from the elliptical galaxy NGC5044 (centre), this 3-minute COAST image includes numerous other galaxies including NGCs 5031, 5035, 5037, 5046, 5047 & 5049.

NGC5044 elliptical galaxy app. mag. 10.8. Discovered 1785 Dec 31 by William Herschel.

NGC5031 lenticular galaxy app. mag. 12.9. Discovered, 1881 Mar 17 by Edward Holden.

NGC5035 lenticular galaxy app. mag. 12.8. Discovered 1787 May 5  by William Herschel.

NGC5037 spiral galaxy dist. 150-155million ly diam. 80-85,000ly app. mag. 12.2. Discovered

1785 Dec 31 by William Herschel, distinguished by the two bright dots at either end

of the disk - which turn out (disappointingly) to be foreground stars rather than

                 supernovae!

NGC5046 elliptical galaxy app. mag. 13.5 Discovered 1881 May 17  by Edward Holden.

NGC5047 lenticular galaxy app. mag. 12.6 Discovered 1787 May 7  by William Herschel.

NGC5049 lenticular galaxy app. mag. 13.0 Discovered 1785 Dec 31 by William Herschel.
