About this image

This galaxy (centre of image) has an active nucleus. Making it bright and illuminating the central bulge. It's a spiral galaxy but does not have bars. Sadly the image size limit means I have to compress the image, but zoom in and you can make out dust lanes and structure. Not bad for an object 17.4Mpc away!. At 56light years the light from this object left during the early Eocene epoch.

If you tune the contrast you can make out dozens of smaller galaxies in this image as well as the larger ones. All are in the same vicinity - the Virgo Cluster. We are lucky to be able to see such marvels!
