(676) Melitta occults UCAC4 416-092139

About this image

The ~80 km diameter asteroid (676) Melitta, mag 13.8, was predicted to occult a mag 14.3 star in Sct for up to 8.8 s. Their combined merged magnitude was 13.3, so the drop in brightness during occultation would be 0.5 mag.

Analysis of my light curve gave:

D  - 23 58 48.31 ± 0.34

R  - 23 58 57.97 ± 0.34

Duration - 9.66 s

Mag drop - 0.5

Occultation timings of this event were also obtained by Konrad Guhl (DE) and Wojciech Burzynski (PL). William Stewart (GB) was clouded out. The three chords are displayed across a DAMIT shape model of Melitta (derived from light curve inversion).

In recent weeks, a number of stellar occultations by asteroid (676) Melitta have been recorded by European observers. Collectively, these will be used to refine its dimensions, shape profile and solar system orbit.
