About this image

This mag.13 planetary nebula was discovered by William Herschel in July 1784. Its faintness and size (c.1.45' x 1.05') perhaps account for its infrequent observation since.

This image shows the oval shape of the nebula and three distinct 'rings': a dark blue inner, a fainter blue-ish band and a red-ish outer band with irregular outline. The central star, however, is not visible.

Distance c.4,000ly. Diameter c.1.5ly.

Bortle 7/8.
