About this image

While up north near equinox I managed to catch an unexpected aurora from a dark location.

I didn't notice until about 22:00 and then the show lasted until after I went to bed at 02:45. The shape was entirely visible with the red upward pointing rays obvious and changes happening over a few 10s of seconds generally. The main arc was apparent (when dark adapted) as pale grey/green but while the red was visible visually, its redness was not.

Would have liked to move elsewhere to avoid powerlines but I only took at tiny tripod and there was nothing to stand it on that would have raised the camera above the grass.

There may be another picture later.

In summer the midges might have been unbearable - and the sky too bright anyway - but in the autumn its possible to stay outdoors at night and just listen to the birds on the Loch.
