About this image
Frames from the STEREO-A HI1 camera (approx 20 deg FoV offset 14 deg from the Sun's centre) processed to remove the strong gradient caused by sunlight scattered off interplanetary dust (the F-corona) as described in this document and then animated. The comet shows a dynamic ion tail (bottom) and a significant dust tail (top). The moving object below the comet is Mars.
STEREO-A is in an orbit similar to Earth's with a slightly shorter period so it moved ahead of the Earth when it was launched in 2006. It came back to the Earth in 2023 August, overtook us and it is now moving ahead again.
You can find more animations derived from the STEREO raw data here.
