About this image

The aim for an asteroid occultation observation is to find the star, and record it for a few minutes centered on the predicted appulse time.  In this example (the first for many months!) the star is r12.8  (UCAC4-634-021792), the asteroid m17, and about 11km in diameter.  I was in the middle of predicted path.

Being in the path doesn't guarantee an occultation, but this time i recorded one.  Its a narrow path, and a testament to the huge improvement in prediction quality over the last 3 years.

The picture shows the star field (0.3deg). The star is indicated, bottom left is the path shown by Occult4, and the bottom right the Tangra light curve from the SER file.  [ Yellow and Green are comparison stars, Blue is the star occulted ].  On frame time-stamps give the event time and duration. [ 1.3 sec].

The time of the observation will provide very precise astrometry to +/- 5 mas.   [ That bit is not done by me, i might add! ]

"Comparison stars" are used to monitor seeing conditions, and not to derive absolute magnitudes (generally).

Very nice!
