About this image

This 14.5 magnitude asteroid occulted the 13.1 mag star to the right ( UCAC4 571_007453 ). In this image the exposure to capture the asteroid was 2-sec as it passed roughly mid way between a wide double.   The exposure I used for measuring the duration of the occultation was 0.33s in a FITS Sequence.

From the prediction i was near the southern edge. I measured a duration of 1.6s.  An observer in the middle of the path would have seen a 4 sec disappearance.  Transparency was quite poor owing to a bonfire-smoke laden atmosphere and a longer exposure was needed.

This was a "trans-atlantic" event, with some US observers joining from the West at a more sociably hour.

There are two observation chords for this event from the UK (reported so far), and one near-miss.

The asteroid is part of a project led by Dr. Anna Marciniak - http://iota es.de/neglected_asteroids.html

The Astronomical Observatory Institute of Poznan, Poland,  is coordinating a world-wide observing campaign of somewhat neglected asteroids with slow rotation and small light-curve amplitudes.

There are number of projects to study certain asteroids by observing occultations.  Details here:
