About this image

This observation, squeezed in between twilight and bright moonlight, shows the low resolution spectrum of Comet 12P with an expanded coma after one of several outbursts. See for example this image by Grant Privett taken the same evening.  Sunlight reflected from dust dominates both the inner and outer coma, superimposed on the usual neutral gas emission lines.

(The horizontal streaks in the spectrum images are flat field artifacts in these raw uncorrected images, not structure in the coma)
