About this image

This attractive reflection nebula was discovered by Edward Barnard  in March 1886. Amongst other achievements, Barnard made the last ever visual discovery of a moon when he found Jupiter's fifth moon, Amalthea, in September 1892 - he was using Vanderbilt University's observatory's 6-inch refractor! The observatory was later relocated off-campus and equipped with a larger instrument.

Distance c.5,500ly. Age 5-10million yrs.
