About this image

I was pleasantly surprised to see that St Thomas' church had an exhibition of one of Luke Jerram's illuminated, rotating Gaia Earth globes. While I was in the church the janitor switched off the indoor lights. He said "I'm not locking up, just making it dark in the church so you can see the globe at its best". It was fitting to hear the accompanying audio of the Apollo 8 crew saying how they were the first astronauts to take colour pictures of the Earth seen as a full globe.

I've seen the Earth and Moon globes in Bradford, Wakefield and the Natural History Museum, London. It's the varying locations which add unique ambience to the experience.

Here's the webpage for the display on the Isle of Man - and the YouTube video 'Gaia Touring Earth Artwork'
