About this image

(55565) is a Trans-Neptunian Object listed in the BAA Handbook.as being about 760km in diameter, so not quite large enough to be a dwarf planet. According to the MPC, it had a V magnitude 20.0 and was 44.9 AU distant at the time of observation.

Typical sky brightness at Tacande is 21.4 magnitudes per square arc second, so a seeing disk of 3 arcseconds covers 7 square arcseconds and as log(7)*2.5 = 2.1, the sky brightness behind (55565) is 19.3. In other words, the TNO is 1.9 times fainter than the sky. That is why extensive image processing was applied, both noise removal and contrast stretching, to make the object visible and why sky noise is still apparent.
