Sprites over northern France

About this image

They are not astronomical but they do occur in the night sky. There were a lot of active thunderstorms over northern France last night but it was clear here so it was an ideal time to pick up sprites. I got quite a few events but these are the best ones, captured on my UK004E meteor camera which looks southeast from Chelmsford. The sprites are on a single frame of the 25 fps video and this animation is seven frames long. The raw video is here if you want to see how fast they really are.

I had not realised until now quite how brief they are. Impressive!
