About this image

I had some clear-ish intervals before midnight on this night, then it was mostly cloudy. This bright Perseid was captured on my SW-facing video meteor camera. Its terminal flare reached mag -3.5 and would have been a spectacular sight to any observer who saw it in their zenith.

After weeks of cloudy skies and low meteor rates we now have activity from several streams, mostly southern delta Aquariids, alpha Capricornids, kappa Cygnids and of course the Perseids, whose maximum is expected around 13:00 to 16:00 UT on August 12. The nights of August 11 and 13 should also be favourable for meteor watching. The low Perseid rates in early August usually increase a week before maximum, so if the clouds relent there should now be good numbers of meteors on display.
