Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell - John Stewart Bell - Belfast City Hall
About this image
Belfast City Hall has a Visitor Exhibition which explains the history of the city and there’s also display panels about its famous citizens. The International Achievers section highlights Dame Jocelyn Bell Burnell and Dr John Stewart Bell.
Dame Jocelyn was the guest keynote speaker at the 11th May BAA meeting in Greenock and she’s well known for her discovery of pulsars. It was a major breakthrough in astrophysics but considered too early in her career to share the Nobel Prize in Physics which went to her PhD supervisor Antony Hewish, and Martin Ryle.
Dr John Bell did advanced theoretical work on quantum theory and quantum entanglement, proposing his Bell’s Theorem. It’s believed he was being nominated for the Nobel Prize in Physics but sadly he passed away that year (and it is not awarded posthumously).
