About this image

This comet was discovered by ATLAS on 2024 April 5. It will come to perihelion on 2025 Jan 13 at a distance of only 0.09 au. It has been brightening quite rapidly but it is currently a difficult target very low in the morning twilight at declination -40. This image was taken using a 135mm Samyang lens at the iTelescope Chile site when the comet was only 6 deg up (the Sun was 13 deg down). The original image has a very strong background gradient which I have removed by median estimation using a radius of 30 pixels.  I get a magnitude of 9.1 using Gaia G reference stars which is some way above the current prediction. It will be an evening object after perihelion but the southern hemisphere will be favoured.
