About this image

This COAST image shows M105 (left), NGC3384 (lower right) and the much fainter NGC3389 (upper right).

M105 is an elliptical galaxy and was discovered by Pierre Méchain in March 1781. It was added to the Messier Catalogue by the remarkable Helen Sawyer Hogg in 1947. Distance c.32million ly, diameter c.54,000ly, apparent mag. 10.2. 

NGC3384 is a lenticular galaxy. It was discovered by William Herschel in March 1784. Distance c.35million ly. apparent mag. 10.9, size c.55-60,000ly. 

NGC3389 is a spiral galaxy. It was discovered by William Herschel in March 1784. Distance c.75million ly. apparent magnitude 12.4, size c.50,000ly.

M105 and NGC3384 are members of the Leo 1 galaxy group.
