About this image
With thick cloud early in the evening, which was forcast to stay all night, a fortuitous window opened, so I headed out to the observatory hoping to capture both Jupiter and Mars.
Prior to capturing Mars at opposition, I had a couple of runs at Jupiter, capturing the fast developing NTrZ outbreak. I started with a Baader Barlow in train, hence operating at an effective F21, but was struggling to get good focus. I'm not sure if that was too much amplification for the conditions, or me rushing to get Jupiter done, so that I could concentrate on Mars. Anyway, I decided to remove the Barlow, dropping the rig down to F13, where focus fell into place much more readily.
These are my first images of the outbreak since capturing it as tiny bright spot on it's first day.
NB I did a complete reprocess of both images, mainly to get a better result on the earlier image. I think these versions are more similar and better show the progress of the outbreak.
