Title

Venus night side comparisons 2nd February

About this image

Ideally the Sun needs to be five degrees below the horizon and Venus at leat 15 degrees above the horizon to stand any chance of detecting night side features on Venus.  I don't have that luxury from my location as Venus sets behind my house from the angle of my observatory when it is 28 degrees above the horizon and as it heads towards inferior conjunction I have less time each day.  On Sunday 2nd February Venus was in the right position with the Sun at 5 degrees below for just 16 minutes.    My current equipment however can still detect the night side of Venus although not optimally, even when the Sun is a little above the horizon, as this set of images from when the Sun was just over three degrees above the horizon to eight degrees below show.
