About this image

NGC 2936, the Porpoise Galaxy, and its nearby elliptical are the DSS Object of Interest for March.

This 75-minute exposure shows (just about!) the Porpoise leaping over the elliptical. But given Bortle 7/8 skies and a 42% illuminated Moon, I was pleased to register anything at all.

The cluster was discovered by Albert Marth in March 1864 using a 48" reflector (roughly 10x the aperture of the Unistellar). It lies at a distance of about 320million ly. The Porpoise is a mag. 13.1 spiral galaxy. The elliptical companion is mag. 13.7 and is about 70,000ly in size.
