About this image

Palomar 9 is reputedly the easiest of the Palomar clusters to observe, being relatively bright and close to a mag. 5.0 star, v2 Sagittarii.

It was discovered by William Herschel in August 1784.

This PIRATE image shows the cluster just above v2 Sgr. About half a dozen brighter (foreground?) stars are seen in front of a haze of tiny, fainter stars in a loosely circular shape.

Distance from the Galactic Centre: c.7,800ly. Mag. 9.28. Age: c.12billion yrs. - which is rather old!
