About this image

A detailed view of sunrise over the great 'walled plain' Deslandres. Once known informally as 'Hellplain', after the crater Hell on its floor, it was briefly renamed Horbiger, after the Austrian crank and Nazi sympathiser Hanns Horbiger, before finally being officially named. It has clearly suffered an interesting and violent geological history, its floor scarred by secondary impacts, lava flows and infilling from ejecta deposits, all of which show up well under this low illumination.
