Title

Interstellar comet with a 90mm aperture

About this image

I imaged this interstellar comet with a large aperture from Chile a few hours after this image was taken but I can't get to -18 dec from my main telescope since a neighbour's tree is in the way. It is a very nice tree but a bit of a pain in this case. Without much hope of success I pointed a small (90mm) refractor at the field mounted on an EQ6 at the other end of the garden. This has a very good southern horizon but I didn't really expect much given the small aperture. The comet is currently in the star-clouds of Sagittarius so the field is very busy but when I stacked the frames at the comet's offset rate I was surprised to see that I had detected it, just, almost merged with one of the star trails. You can compare with Nick Haig's image here which was taken at about the same time but which is rotated by 90 deg. The comet is around mag 18.

Can anyone get the comet with a smaller aperture than that? It would be a push to get it with a 50mm Seestar since you would probably need about four times the total exposure and there isn't enough darkness at this time of year but I'm sure someone will try!
