About this image

The 50 km-diameter mag 14.6 asteroid (3578) Carestia was predicted to occult a mag 12.6 star in Pegasus for up to 4.6s. After some weeks of poor sky quality and now the light summer nights I was pleased to get this positive observation

I was 5 km outside the 50 km-wide predicted shadow. A path shift of about 30 km to the SW gave me a success. The target star's RUWE(Gaia) is 1.15.

My timings were:

  Event time in UTC

   D: 22 27 27.73 ± 0.05

   R: 22 27 31.33 ± 0.05

The mid-time will be used for high-accuracy astrometry of the asteroid.

Unfortunately, the six other observers (in mainland Europe) were clouded out, so we only got one chord across the asteroid - several are needed to derive a shape profile.
