About this image

Arp 214 (NGC 3718) is approximately 52 million light years away in Ursa Major. Its swirling s-shape certainly qualifies it for Arp’s catalogue of ‘peculiar’ galaxies, and may be due to gravitational interaction with NGC 3729, shown in the upper left of the image. Also in this image is Arp 322 a cluster of interacting galaxies around 400M LY away, shown here just under Arp 214. This group is also numbered 56 in the Hickson’s catalogue of compact groups (HCG).
