About this image

This dwarf irregular galaxy was discovered by Lewis Swift in October 1887. It is the Deep Sky Section's October 'Object of Interest'.

This image, created using the OU's PIRATE (Physics Innovations Robotic Astronomical Telescope Explorer) gives a good indication of the galaxy's diffuse nature and irregular form.

A member of the Local Group, it is the only known starburst galaxy therein (a galaxy that displays unusually high rates of star formation) .

Apparent mag. c.10.4. Diameter c.5,000ly. Distance c.2-3million ly.
