About this image

Time quoted is local time for Brisbane Australia (UT plus 10 hours.)

My house and observatory are situated on a 176 metre high ridge and in the north-east there is an interesting gap in the hills in the direction of the Airport, Port, Moreton Bay and Moreton Island. The sun rises over the centre of this gap in mid winter. This means that near sunset in mid summer the sun shines through the clearing around our house and produces a nice effect of the anti-solar point in this direction. In the next few weeks this point (shown on the image) will move to the left until it is directly under this gap at the time of our summer solstice. - In other words, under where the Sun will rise 6 months later.

I find this an interesting demonstration of the anti-solar point directly opposite the sun where there is no shadow.  I have usually only observed it from aircraft, tracking along with the aircraft, though it can be seen under some fog or other conditions if the angles are right.

The image has been adjusted for brightness and contrast only.
