Title

NGC 474 - Arp 227 A Ring Galaxy

About this image

An attempt to pick out the faint concentric rings around the main galaxy which has interacted with NGC470.

Halton Arp points out that there are a pair of quasars 3C39 & 3C37 that have similar redshifts (within 0.09 of each other) aligned across the centre of the galaxy. Arp cites this as being a 1 in 500 million chance of this being an accidental configuration. (Outside of this field of view).

Two additional quasars are however seen here south east of NGC470 (0117+031)
