About this image
I participated in the Lunar Impact Flashes (LIFs): Geminid Observing Campaign.
https://lif.mi.imati.cnr.it/
During the early hours of Dec 13 (03:38 - 07:40 UT) I video recorded the portion of the Moon illuminated by Earthshine, hoping to detect impact flashes caused by Geminid meteoroids striking the lunar surface. Unfortunately, I was clouded out on Dec 13/14 when Geminid maximum was expected to occur around 03 hrs UT.
I used Tony Cook's ALFI software to process my numerous 5-minute AVI files and it detected quite a number of candidate events. I uploaded 19 of these to the LIF website.
As of mid-January the Campaign reports 9 confirmed LIFs (3 of them in my set) on Dec 12/13 and 11 confirmed on Dec 13/14. (A LIF is confirmed when 2 or more observers record a flash at the same instant and at the same location on the Moon).
BAA observers contributed some of these confirmatory observations. The next LIF Campaign Newsletter should contain a comprehensive list of confirmed and suspected LIFs for observers to check in their recordings.
