About this image

This photo was taken from the top deck of the MS Balmoral, which was cruising in Westfjords, Iceland (N65° 38’, W25° 02’): very close to the eclipse centreline. The sky was very cloudy, with the odd break allowing views of the eclipse as it progressed. The wind was a stiff North Easterly, gusting up to Force 5, which made photography a bit of a challenge!

Although we weren't able to see totality, thanks to a big black cloud, the fall in light level was very dramatic and made for an unforgettable scene. We were able to get glimpses of the eclipse up to about 2 minutes before the start of totality and then again from about 1 minute after the end of totality which, from our location, would have been just 1 second less than the theoretical maximum of 2 minutes and 18 seconds.
