About this image

This unusual spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in February 1786.

In this PIRATE image, the bar and attached arms, giving an S-shape, can be well seen. The asymmetric surrounding mass of material gives the galaxy a overall odd outline which seems difficult to account for.

Apparent mag. 11.5. Distance c.30million ly. Diameter c.24,000 ly.
