Saturn x2 (OSC-IR) - 2 Oct 2026
About this image
After a hiatus of over 5 months since I pointed my C14 telescope at the night sky, I finally got out on the night of 1-2 Oct to take my first looks at Saturn this apparition.
It was also my first time using the P1 Uranus-C camera on Saturn, so it took me a while to dial in the camera capture settings, not helped by poor seeing and the scope initially being out of collimation.
Having collimated the scope, the seeing also improved a little after 1am (02/10) so I ran a couple of capture series including using the IR642 filter for the first image and a deeper IR742 for the second image. Both images are IR enhanced OSC.
There is some colourful banding visible on Saturn's globe and a storm (light spot) can be seen in the southern hemisphere, with that having moved with the planets rotation by the time of the 2nd image set captured about 3/4 hour later.
The rings look bright due to the Seeliger effect when Saturn is close to opposition, which happened on 4 Oct 2026.
Saturn's moon Tethys can be seen just above the rings to the left of Saturn.
