About this image

The body of the rocket that launched the NGRST to the Lagrange point is still moving away from us and fading.

Tonight, it looked like mag 18.6 (Gaia G) but I had rather expected it to be fainter. On the other hand, its at -14 Declination and viewed through a hedge,  so I will take mag 18.6 - detectable in a single frame - as a win. Will keep returning to it for a while yet, before it slips away for years.

Is this similar to the way Spektr-RG is discovered regularly?

Yes. You would think that the surveys would keep tabs on these things but clearly they don't.
