Observer’s Challenge – Sketch M5

Sketching Deep Sky Objects is a very rewarding and relaxing way to observe. No need for complicated telescopes, cameras or computers. You can just sit at the eyepiece with a sketch pad and a pencil.
At this time of year the globular cluster Messier 5 in Serpens is well placed for observing in the south around midnight. There is the ‘bright’ 5th magnitude star 5 Ser nearby, which is a good target for star-hopping.
As a supplementary challenge you might like to track down the two Cepheid variable stars in M5; V42 and V84 were discovered by David Elijah Packer about 100 years ago. V42 is easier to locate being on the fringes of the cluster.
Please do try and sketch M5 over the next few weeks. Scan or photograph your sketch and post on your Members Album. We look forward to seeing your observations.
