Can someone please tell me in which BAAJ I might find details of the very first Winchester Weekend (how and why it was set up etc.) My Journals only go back to early 1978 when I first became a member, and of course you can’t search the PDF’s on the members pages. Thanks,Gary

Hi Gary, the 2006 Winchester Weekend was billed as the 40th – so that would make 1966 this first – assuming there was one held every year.Been thinking about how to provide searchable journals, but no easy technical solution so far :-(Cheers, Callum

Thanks Callum. Narrows it down a bit.Just out of interest, this will be my 33rd Winchester. I know John Wall, Roger Pickard and Dick Chambers all have a long Winchester history. Anyone else out there with a few weekends under their belt?Gary

The first reference I could find in my searchable Journal set was vol 77, no. 2, p74. It was announced as a residential weekend course (in drinking beer?) and ran from 1967 April 14 to April 16. That would put the 40th one in 2006 as Callum said. I’ll see you there!Nick.

Thanks Nick. I like the price (£4.4s with a 12/6 deposit, or for our younger members £4.20p and 63p – I think :-).In JBAA Vol. 77 No. 4 page 264 (June 1967) you will find the write up to the first meeting. Fifty six "students" attended, and with an assortment of telescopes from a 2.5 inch to 8.5 inch reflectors managed to observe theMoon, Jupiter and Mars through breaks in the cloud, and a sun spot projected with a 3 inch OG. Lecturers were Howard Miles, J. Hedley Robinson, Michael Hendry and Alfred Cuirtis. Not a bad speaker list I’d say!Gary
