2010 WC9

2010 WC9 is not far from its closest approach. It looks like this evening will be the best time to catch it for us in the UK. It'll be close to the border of Hercules and Ophiuchus at 2200 UT. I'll be inputting J(now) eph into my GOTO and keeping my fingers crossed! The MPC states that its sky motion will be about 30arcsec/min, so 5s exposures should be OK.

2010 WC9 from last night

In addition to the maximum stacked image on my member's page, I have created a short video from the same frames. It runs at 5fps. https://1drv.ms/u/s!Agvxu8wNOxpAcskxKKX5lQZyCh4

David, Thanks for the heads

David, Thanks for the heads up on this. I imaged it this morning using a widefield instrument so the trail is small but it is visible. The observation is here.

2010 WC9 heads up

David,

thanks for posting about this brief opportunity to see this NEO from the UK.

I find it frustrating and amusing in equal measure that the MPC's 'Daily Minor Planet' often tells us about NEO flybys the day after they've been and gone.    :-)

I had to smile this teatime as I checked my e-mails and ESA's 2010 WC9 Close-Approach Fact Sheet arrived in my Inbox at 16:09. Informative but no use for planning a UK observing session.

Thankfully other resources such as the Minor Planet Mailing List and some astro magazines tell us in advance. I recorded 2010 WC9 last night and will add something to my Member Page this evening.

Clear skies,

     Alex.

Widefield image

Very nice. In the medium term I think I'll look at buying a short focal length refractor. It is lovely to have a wide field of view.

David,

Thanks for drawing this to everyone’s attention.

I’ll see if it’s worth a note.
