An amateur astro-imager is suggesting that SN 1962C, discovered by Fritz Zwicky during the Palomar Supernova Survey, is in fact a field star.

There is indeed a field star at or near that location but that star is clearly visible in all surveys, including on a plate from 1950 taken as part of POSS-1 and available in digitised form in DSS-1. This or another pre-discovery plate would presumably have been blinked with the discovery plate so it seems surprising that Zwicky would not have recognised this as a field star. The other alternative could be that SN 1962C was close to the field star but separate from it. An examination of the discovery plate would resolve the issue. Does anyone know where this discovery plate might be accessed ?

    Thanks
    Robin
