Astronomy has been a consuming interest since following the adventures of Colonel Dan Dare in the Eagle comic in the 1950s. I have been a member of the BAA since 1982 and am primarily a visual observer. Since I have no observatory I long ago took the advice of Patrick Moore and have found binoculars to be the most useful instrument, spending the available time observing rather than setting up equipment. Also making it easier to avoid the fierce lighting of the highway on which we live. I submit observations regularly to the VSS, and since I live in Perth in Western Australia, like to think that some of them may help to extend the seasonal coverage of some stars. I take few photos but hope to extend my interest and abilities in this area. For the last 30 years I have been fortunate to have the pleasure and opportunity of running the St Hilda’s Astronomical Society at the school where I teach. To these students I owe the accompanying profile photo.
