Patrick Moore and Richard Baum were two of the most prominent British amateur astronomers of the generation that emerged after World War II. From common interests and a shared approach in H. P. Wilkins’ post-war BAA Lunar Section, they struck out in different directions and developed different emphases in how they approached astronomy. The present paper attempts to show how those differences not only illuminate the personalities and relationship of Moore and Baum but also allow us insights into the nature of astronomical observation itself.
