Saturn during the 2010/2011 apparition: Part I
2025 August 9
This report describes observations of Saturn made by Section members during the 2010/2011 apparition. This apparition was noteworthy, as a ‘Great Storm’ occurred in the planet’s northern hemisphere. Such storms are sometimes described as Great White Spots, as they often appear as large, bright, white spots during their early stages of development. This was the sixth recorded occurrence of this type of storm. The report is divided into two parts. Part I (herein) describes the general appearance of the planet, spots other than the Great Storm, the rings and ring spokes, and some satellite phenomena. Part II describes the storm in detail, including the evolution of its head, the appearance of a large, dark anti-cyclonic vortex (often referred to as the AV) and their subsequent interaction during 2011 June. A comparison is made to some professional observations, including from the Cassini spacecraft which was in orbit around the planet at the time.
