The Moon’s altitude above the horizon depends on the observer’s latitude and the Moon’s declination (the angle its orbit makes with Earth’s equatorial plane). The formula for its maximum altitude is given herein. A creature of the tropics, the Moon can only be seen at the zenith within, at the most, 28.5° latitude north and south. This paper presents charts of the Moon’s altitude as seen from various latitudes in summer and winter and discusses its upper and lower transits.
