Animated GIFs

I created a animated gif of Comet 46P.  When I uploaded it to the website all but the first image of the GIF has been stripped away from the file.  Does the file need to be a certain format or does this happen to all animated GIFs.  (I created it using GIMP).

Also it was quite hard to create a GIF under 2MB.  I really had to crop it hard.  Is there any chance we could relax the file size rules a little?
