Orion is coming round again so before closing down I thought I would just have a quick look for Mc Neil's nebula. It should be seen near the pair of stars shown, but is not even hinted at in this image. Its a variable nebula so always worth looking for - gives a great excuse to image M78 too.

See also my observation of 18th August 2020.  I suspect it could be many years before it comes back...but, as you say, it's still worth checking just in case.

Yes, we may have to wait a while before its back - rather like Gyulbudaghian's neb at the moment. NGC6729 is much more active but less dramatic...
