About this image

A quick look at M78 to check for the visibility of McNeil's variable nebula: it's still missing!  The tick marks show the expected location of the nebula with only a very faint smudge at the location of 'lobe C' visible (possibly just an image artefact?).  The anatomy and early history of McNeil's nebula is described in The Astrophysical Journal, 606:L123-L126, 2004 May 10.  Figure 2 of that paper shows what 'lobe C' looked like between 2004 and 2017.

The very over exposed core of M78 is at top left in this 20 x 20 arc minute field with north up.
