As John Mason explains in his article on the prospects for this year's Perseids, lesser meteor showers are also active at the moment. Here's a composite image from my SW-facing RMS camera UK000U on the night of August 2/3 showing the trails of 30 meteors, namely 17 Perseids, 2 kappa Cygnids, 1 alpha Capricornid, 1 northern delta Aquariid, 1 southern delta Aquariid and 8 sporadics. The curved dotted lines are produced by the trails of background stars.

There will be a dramatic increase in the numbers of Perseid meteors as we approach the peak nights of August 11 and 12. The Perseids will put on a show into the third week in August, giving us plenty of observing opportunities even if the weather is unfavourable.
