About this image

This barred spiral galaxy was discovered by William Herschel in November 1784, although it was not identified as such until many years later.

The nucleus, bar and the rather dense disk are shown in this image together with the less well-defined spiral arms. An interesting object.

Distance c.30million ly. Diameter c.100,000 ly. Bortle 7/8. Moon at first quarter 47%.
