While PV Cephei itself is easily spotted, the nebula itself remains very faint indeed. In fact, I don't recall ever seeing it dimmer. When the normally much dimmer lobe is brighter than the bit that varies, you know it really is playing hard to get.
Lets just say its not really a visual object at the moment.
EDIT: Nope I was wrong. Below Mike Harlow points out a time when the nebula was even fainter - I forgot it. I even took a pic at the time myself!

It did completely fade from view at the end of 2020...so it's not as faint as it can get!

You're right! I had forgotten that time. For a while there was a dark ring round the star.
Given we are thinking of nebulosity thats fainter than the (normally) dim lobe - we're looking quite deep.
