About this image
Having moved house towards the end of last year it was necessary to build a new observatory for my 358mm f/5 Newtonian. The genesis of the design was Martin Mobberly’s tutorial.
The shed itself is a 6’x6’ Keter plastic shed mounted on a frame fitted with eight wheels and four guide wheels. This runs on aluminium angle tracks screwed to a pair of wooden rails cemented into the ground at intervals with ‘Post-Mix’. The motion is quite free to the extent that brakes had to be fitted to stop the observatory rolling back in a strong breeze.
The shed has enough room inside to store a table, an observing chair and even fit a couple of shelves.
NB: Because of the compression necessary to meet the 2MB limit the image is somewhat posterised. In reality the surfaces of the shed are completely smooth in appearance.
